How to maintain beauty and health: insights from a Mediceuticals trichologist

We met with Inna Skus, a trichologist and brand technologist, to discuss the brand’s unique features, the issue of seasonal hair loss, and the signs that it’s time to take better care of your scalp and hair.

— Let’s start with a simple question: why is Mediceuticals “WOW”?

IS: Mediceuticals is an American highly specialized brand of therapeutic cosmetics. It includes four product lines designed to solve specific problems: hair loss, thinning, dermatological issues (dandruff, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, flaking, itching, redness, etc.), and restoration of hair length.

We take particular pride in products suitable for individuals with compromised immunity (for example, infants from 0+ months and people with oncological diseases), products for those with severe scalp damage (severe inflammation, burns, wounds, and injuries), and trichological styling that can be used even in the presence of dermatological problems.

— So, it’s not just another cosmetic line—it’s cosmeceuticals?

IS: Absolutely. Mediceuticals was founded by a team of scientists and doctors in the 1960s, making it the oldest specialized brand. Moreover, the company focuses on technology, efficiency, and simplicity.

— Sounds enticing. Could you tell us more about that?

IS: Let’s take it step by step.

The water base of all the brand’s products undergoes purification according to the USP Purified Water (United States Pharmacopeia) standard. This is a pharmaceutical-grade, multi-level purification. Thanks to this, the water contains no sulfates, chlorides, nitrates, or heavy metals, and has a limited content of organic impurities and microbiome.

This allows us to add a minimum of preservatives and makes the formulas more stable and effective. Also, the products do not contain silicones or aggressive surfactants like SLS or SLES.

Each line consists of 2-3 products, the use of which does not require additional knowledge, skills, or complex routines.

The therapeutic lines are based on proven active components or their combinations. The effectiveness of these products is visible from the first application.

That is why, as part of Mediceuticals Brand Days, we perform scalp diagnostics—trichoscopy—before and after using our products. This way, clients can see the results for themselves.

— Is it really that fast and simple?

IS: Yes! When it comes to dermatological problems, we can resolve them or relieve acute symptoms with a course lasting 1–2 months.

— You said “resolve or relieve.” Are there nuances?

IS: There are chronic conditions. For example, it is impossible to get rid of seborrheic dermatitis completely. One can achieve a long-term remission where itching, flaking, and skin irritation are absent. However, due to stress, hormonal changes, decreased immunity, or insufficient/incorrect hygiene, they will return.

In such cases, we prescribe consistent gentle care and therapeutic courses during flare-ups when the symptoms manifest and cause distress.

 

— And what about hair loss?

IS: That’s a bit more complex. Hair loss is influenced by a wide range of factors, from health status, nutrition quality, and stress levels to genetics and short-term aspects like being under general anesthesia, pregnancy, or a coronavirus infection.

When people come to us with a hair loss problem, we conduct an in-depth interview. We gather a medical history, including the health status of the first and second generations, the presence of allergies, check the depression and anxiety scale, and analyze routines. This includes hair care habits: frequency of washing, products used, etc.

This is all very important because the hair falling out today actually died about 1–3 months ago. Our task is to figure out exactly what happened back then, in the past. What we do now depends on that. If we do anything at all [laughs].

— If?

IS: For example, when a person has had “Covid,” the hair loss will be temporary: the hair will fall out and can recover on its own. Therefore, more attention should be directed toward supporting the body after the massive viral intoxication. This means ensuring quality nutrition and taking vitamins and microelements prescribed by a doctor. Therapy to restore hair growth becomes secondary.

The same applies to “seasonal hair loss.”

From a scientific point of view, it doesn’t exist. Yet, it happens.

In winter, our immunity drops, we get sick often, have deficiencies, and don’t wear hats, exposing the hair and skin to frosty, dry air. Or we wear a hat on unwashed hair (due to the utility collapse caused by shelling). Underneath, the opportunistic microbiome begins to “bloom.”

We need to understand why the hair is falling out first. Only then can we plan the treatment methods.

 

— You mentioned hygiene and hair care routines…

IS: Without good cleansing, the health of the scalp and hair won’t be great.

Actually, that’s why I have a negative view of completely sulfate-free shampoos: they under-cleanse and don’t wash away enough.

Mediceuticals products use gentle sulfate surfactants, specifically Ammonium Sulfate. It effectively removes sebum—which is crucial for oily scalps and seborrheic dermatitis—as well as styling residue and impurities.

Well-cleansed skin is healthy skin. Cleanliness keeps the microbiome in check and prevents the overgrowth of opportunistic microflora, such as fungi, yeast, and Demodex mites.

If such growth has occurred, it must be treated.

— What does a healthy scalp look like?

IS: Even color and tone. No visible vessels, redness, irritation, rashes, or flaking. No feeling of discomfort, tightness, itching, or pain.
