What Is Hair Toning?

Hair toning is a gentle procedure used to correct or refresh the shade of the hair with ammonia-free, semi-permanent or specialist alkaline colour products. It helps revive the colour, neutralise unwanted tones, add shine and give the hair a healthy, well-maintained appearance.

Depending on the selected product, toning can do more than simply adjust the colour. Formulas containing conditioning ingredients may also have a positive effect on the condition and appearance of the hair.

Who Is Hair Toning Suitable For?

Hair toning can address a wide range of colour-maintenance needs. It is suitable after lightening, highlights, balayage, ombré or shatush, as well as for maintaining a clean blonde shade, refreshing natural hair colour, correcting the tone of light brown or dark hair, and gently blending grey hair.

Toning Lightened and Blonde Hair

Toning is an essential stage of blonde hair maintenance. It neutralises unwanted yellow or brassy tones that may appear after lightening.

Your colourist will select the desired colour direction, such as cool ash, warm pearl, neutral beige or a pastel shade. Hair toning is also an effective way to maintain the colour between full colouring appointments.

Before the procedure, the stylist will assess the condition of your hair to select the safest and most suitable formula.

Toning After Highlights, Balayage and Ombré

Complex lightening techniques affect only selected strands. Toning completes the colouring process by balancing the shade of the lightened sections, softening harsh lines and creating smooth, harmonious transitions between different tones.

Toning Natural, Light Brown and Dark Hair

The final result depends on the starting base. On natural or dark hair, toning will not change the colour dramatically, but it can add depth, neutralise unwanted red or brassy undertones, and give the hair a healthier, shinier appearance.

Toning Grey Hair

Toning grey hair is different from providing full grey coverage. It softens the contrast between grey and pigmented strands, gives grey hair a more polished shade and balances the overall colour.

During the consultation, the colourist will advise whether toning will be sufficient or whether permanent hair colour is required.

Types and Shades of Hair Toning

Depending on your starting base and desired result, the stylist can select the most suitable colour direction:

• Warm tones: golden, caramel and honey;
• Neutral and natural tones: wheat, beige and classic light brown;
